5 Questions to Ask a Tablet Factory Before You Sign an OEM/ODM Order

Quick answer

Before you commit to an OEM/ODM tablet supplier, these five questions separate a long-term factory partner from a one-order mistake. This is the vetting…

The short answer: before you sign any OEM or ODM tablet order, ask the factory about (1) who actually owns the tooling and firmware, (2) how they handle certification and market compliance, (3) whether minimum order quantities and lead times are real, (4) how quality and after-sales issues are resolved, and (5) whether they can scale and customize later. The answers — more than the price quote — tell you if you are hiring a partner or gambling on a one-time shipment.

Buyers in the EU and US usually lead with compliance and certification. Buyers in Southeast Asia and the Middle East usually lead with cost, MOQ and lead time. Both are right — but both make the same mistake when they skip the questions below and sign on price alone. This checklist is the vetting process Wintouch runs every buyer through, and it works in every market.

Why the questions matter more than the price

An OEM tablet order is not a commodity purchase. You are committing to a product that carries your brand, reaches your end customers, and — in regulated markets — gets you in front of certification authorities. A factory that cannot answer these five questions cleanly will cost you more in returns, certifications and lost reputation than the pennies you saved on the unit price.

1. Who owns the tooling, molds and firmware?

This is the question that defines the relationship. If the factory owns the mold and the firmware, they can supply your design to your competitor tomorrow. If you do, you can switch suppliers or extend the product line without being held hostage.

  • Confirm in writing whether the mold is yours, whether it is exclusive, and what the exit terms are.
  • Ask whether firmware and OS builds are managed in-house and whether you get the source or an update commitment.
  • Ask whether your brand logo, boot animation and app lock-down can be baked in at the factory (this is standard OEM — a factory that hesitates here usually can’t deliver on customization).

2. How does the factory handle certification and market compliance?

For EU buyers this is the entire deal: CE, RoHS, REACH, and increasingly the right battery and EMC directives. For US buyers it is FCC, and for kids-tablet lines it is often CPSIA and child-safety rules. For MENA and SE-Asia buyers it is local conformity marks and import documentation.

  • Ask which certifications the factory already holds, which are included in the unit price, and which are charged separately.
  • Ask whether certifications cover your exact configuration or only a reference model. A different battery or charger can invalidate a cert.
  • Ask whether they provide the technical file and declaration of conformity you need for market entry.

3. Are the MOQ and lead time real — or a sales pitch?

Low MOQ is a marketing number. The real question is the MOQ for your configuration: your brand, your color, your logo, your custom firmware. Ask for the MOQ and lead time broken down by component — screen, battery, tooling, assembly, aging, packing.

  • Ask how the lead time changes when you customize the OS versus ordering a standard model off the shelf.
  • Ask for a realistic first-shipment timeline including tooling and certification, not just the assembly time.
  • Ask what happens if the schedule slips — is there a penalty, or just a shrug?

4. How are quality and after-sales issues actually resolved?

Tablets fail. The difference between factories is what happens next. Ask for the warranty terms, the failure-rate history, the return/replacement policy, and who carries the freight on defective units.

  • Ask whether they do full burn-in and aging testing before shipment — a factory that skips this ships your field failures for you.
  • Ask for the spare-parts and software-update commitment over the product’s life.
  • Ask who pays for a defective-batch recall or rework.

5. Can they scale — and customize — as you grow?

A good first order is small. A good factory is ready for order two, order ten, and a new product line. Ask about their full catalog, their ability to adjust screen size, CPU, RAM, storage, battery and OS across a family of devices.

  • Ask for their whole product range — an OEM partner with a broad lineup (7-inch to 14-inch, entry to premium) lets you expand without switching suppliers.
  • Ask how quickly they can adapt an existing model to your specs versus building from scratch.
  • Ask about their lead factory, production capacity and how they handle peak demand.

How the answers look at a real factory

Question What a strong partner answers
Tooling & firmware ownership Your brand, logo and firmware baked in; clear terms on mold ownership
Certification & compliance Holds CE/RoHS/FCC; certs included or clearly itemized for your config
MOQ & lead time Transparent MOQ and timeline by component, including tooling and cert
Quality & after-sales Full aging test before shipment; written warranty and replacement terms
Scale & customization Broad catalog (7″–14″) to grow with you; fast model adaptation

An example, in practice

Wintouch runs a factory-direct OEM/ODM program. On the business side, models like the A80-A (10.1″ Android 16) and the A50 (10.1″ Android 14) show the mid-range line, while the A140 14-inch and A136 premium (Helio G99, 8+256GB) cover the big-screen and premium tiers. On the kids side, the T1000 (10.1″, 10000mAh) and T800 (8″, 6000mAh) come with kid-proof builds and parental-control capability. Every model carries the same five-question vetting straight through the door.

What to do next

Ask these five questions of any factory you are talking to — including us. If the answers line up, the next step is to request a quote or a sample of the exact configuration you want to bring to market. Send your target specs and your market, and Wintouch will walk you through MOQ, certification and lead time for your build.
